What are Whale Sharks

Whale sharks are the largest fish in the ocean. Scientists estimate that they may live as long as 130 years.

SUPER SIZE. Average adult whale sharks can measure 9.8 meters (32 feet long) and weigh 9 metric tons (20,000 pounds).

THICK SKIN. A whale shark’s skin can be up to 10 centimeters (4 inches) thick. It is covered in tooth-like scales.

NO BONES! Whale sharks don't have bones, only cartilagea tough, flexible tissue.

GENTLE GIANT. Whale sharks are known for their curiosity and gentleness.

SLOW SWIMMER. Whale sharks move at speeds of little more than 4.8 kilometers (3 miles) an hour.
