Over the Ice

During winter on Antarctica, Adelie penguins migrate north. They live on large chunks of ice. During summer, they head south to beaches. They look for ice‑free land to build nests.

Penguins follow the sun. In winter, the sun is hard to find. So, penguins follow the ice. The ice “grows” over the ocean during winter. They live at the edge of this ice near the ocean.

Adelie penguins chase the sun on their migration.
